Cordless table lamp

Magill

Designed by Peter Ellis · 1995

The Magill was the very first NEOZ cordless lamp, designed by founder Peter Ellis in 1995 for the Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide. Inspired by postmodern architecture, its clean, minimalist form, a clear cylinder over a simple cone, gave the room a warm, glareless glow and quietly proved that a table could be lit beautifully without a cord.

Three decades on, it remains a defining piece in the NEOZ story, and the lamp the Apex would later pay tribute to. It casts a soft sidelight and downlight that flatters both the table and the food, at home in the most considered dining rooms.

Now a heritage piece, the Magill is no longer part of the standard range. It is available in brushed stainless steel while final stocks last, and can be produced to order by special arrangement for larger projects.

Where NEOZ began
The First

Where NEOZ began

The Magill was the very first cordless lamp NEOZ ever made, designed by founder Peter Ellis in 1995 for the Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide. The restaurant, in a landmark building by Allen Jack + Cottier, wanted a light for every table that would flatter the food and the room without a single cord in sight. The Magill answered that brief, and in doing so it set NEOZ on its path. Everything in the range since traces back to this lamp.

Three decades on the table
The Legacy

Three decades on the table

What began as a lamp for one restaurant became a fixture of considered dining rooms far beyond it, from Penfolds Magill Estate to Rockpool Bar & Grill in Melbourne. Three decades on, the Magill is still recognised as a defining piece in the NEOZ story, and it is the lamp the Apex was later designed to pay tribute to. Reliable, quietly beautiful and endlessly serviceable, it is the original that everything else was measured against.

Postmodern lines, a warm glow
The Light

Postmodern lines, a warm glow

The Magill's form is pure and minimal, a clear acrylic cylinder over a simple cone, drawn from the postmodern architecture of its era. That clarity lets the light do the work: a warm sidelight and gentle downlight that pools softly on the table and flatters whatever is set upon it. Understated and architectural, it is a shape that has aged remarkably well.

NEOZ Cordless Lamp Lock
Secure by design

Leave your Magill exactly where you want it

Your Magill is made to move, which is exactly why operators asked us to help them keep it close. The Cordless Lamp Lock secures it to the table itself. A low-profile plate fixes discreetly to the surface, the lamp locks on with a single press, and a dedicated key releases it. No tools, no brackets, and nothing a guest would ever notice.

It lets you place cordless light where you could not before. Outdoor terraces, bar tops and street-facing tables can carry your Magill with the confidence it will still be there tomorrow. The Cordless Lamp Lock is made from 75% post-consumer recycled polycarbonate.

Serviceable

Made to last

Every part is user replaceable, and NEOZ still services lamps made decades ago.

Built to be kept

Buy once, and keep it for years

Every NEOZ lamp is built around our light engine and made to be serviced, not discarded. Move the electronics between bodies, or replace a single worn part, and the lamp you buy today stays with you for years.

Replaceable parts

Fix the part, not the lamp

Battery, light source, diffuser and body are each replaceable on their own. Damage one element and you repair just that part, never the whole lamp.

MODULAR BY DESIGN

Change the body, keep the engine

The NEOZ light engine is independent of the body and lifts out to move between them, the heart of our modular design. Restyle to a new look, or replace a damaged body, while keeping the electronics you already own.

Service and repair

Looked after, wherever you are

Our service centre is in Sydney, and we accept lamps back from anywhere in the world for assessment and repair. More often we diagnose remotely and send the right parts with video instructions, backed by our online help centre, so your lamps keep working wherever they are.

Commercial grade

Made for the floor

Engineered for nightly use in five-star service, with all-day battery life, fast charging and charging solutions that scale from a single base to a 48-lamp station. Backed by an industry-leading 5-year warranty, and fully serviceable for the long term.

Contact us
Why is the Magill significant?

The Magill was the very first cordless lamp NEOZ ever made, designed by founder Peter Ellis in 1995 for the Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide. It is the piece that started the brand, and the lamp the later Apex was designed to pay tribute to, which makes it a genuine part of NEOZ history.

What kind of light does the Magill give?

The Magill sets a clear acrylic cylinder over a simple internal cone, giving a warm sidelight and a gentle downlight that pools softly on the table and flatters the food. Its minimalist, postmodern-inspired form keeps the light, rather than the fitting, as the focus.

Is the Magill still available?

The Magill is a heritage piece and is no longer part of the standard NEOZ range. It is currently available in brushed stainless steel while final stocks last. Beyond that, it can be produced to order by special arrangement for larger projects, subject to a minimum order quantity. Contact the NEOZ team or your local distributor to discuss requirements.

What finish does the Magill come in?

The Magill is offered in brushed stainless steel with a clear acrylic diffuser. For special-order production runs, it can also be made in stainless steel powder-coated in antique bronze. Speak to the NEOZ team about special-order options.

How long does the Magill run, and how is it charged?

A full charge takes around 3.5 hours and gives up to 17.5 hours of light on high and around 55 hours on low, with brightness set by a touch of the base across three levels. The lamp ships with an N1 Charging Base, which includes AU, UK, EU and USA wall plugs.

Is the Magill serviceable and compatible with NEOZ charging and security systems?

Yes. Every major part is user replaceable, including the battery, light source and diffuser, and NEOZ still services lamps made decades ago. The Magill works with all NEOZ charging systems, and is compatible with the Cordless Lamp Lock when purchased with an N1 Light Engine, which applies to lamps whose serial number begins with L, for example LA1234.
