Cordless table lamp

Medusa

Designed by Peter Ellis, David Greenway & Ruth McDermott · 2000

Hand-cast in a Blue Mountains studio by artist Brad Allen-Waters, the Medusa is one of NEOZ's most distinctive pieces: a body of optically clear solid resin that glows from within. Suspended inside is a frosted, stippled core and a specially designed reflector that casts a soft, glare-free light outward through the resin, so the lamp reads as much as a sculpture as a light.

Each Medusa is made individually, poured, set and hand-polished with the patience the material demands, so no two are exactly alike. A substantial, tactile object, it makes a captivating centrepiece for a bar, a table or a quiet corner.

Powered by the long-running PRO engine, it holds a charge for days of service, and every part is user replaceable, so it can be kept and enjoyed for years.

A sculpture that glows
The Form

A sculpture that glows

The Medusa is unlike anything else in the range: a body of optically clear solid resin, polished to smooth curves on the outside and lit from within. Suspended inside is a frosted, finely stippled core that seems to hold the light like an effervescence, set against the clarity of the surrounding resin. It reads as much as an object of art as a lamp, a quiet, captivating centrepiece that draws the eye whether lit or not.

Hand-cast in the Blue Mountains
The Maker

Hand-cast in the Blue Mountains

Every Medusa is made by hand by artist Brad Allen-Waters in his Blue Mountains studio, and has been for close to twenty years. Because the resin is optically clear, the work is exacting: a single speck of dust would show, so cleanliness and patience govern the whole process. The frosted inner texture is created by a sand-coated mould, and a reflector is embedded within the resin as it is cast. Each piece is poured, set and hand-polished individually, roughly one a day, so no two are ever quite the same.

A soft glow, all around
The Light

A soft glow, all around

The reflector set inside the resin gathers the light and casts it outward, softly and without glare, so the Medusa glows evenly in every direction rather than throwing a beam. The effect is warm and diffuse, a pool of light held inside a clear form, at home on a bar, a side table or anywhere a little sculptural atmosphere is wanted.

By hand

One at a time

Each Medusa is individually cast, set and hand-polished by artist Brad Allen-Waters.

310h

Per charge, on PRO

Up to 310 hours on low with the PRO engine; the standard N1 engine runs up to 55 hours.

Built to be kept

Buy once, and keep it for years

Every NEOZ lamp is built around our light engine and made to be serviced, not discarded. Move the electronics between bodies, or replace a single worn part, and the lamp you buy today stays with you for years.

Replaceable parts

Fix the part, not the lamp

Battery, light source, diffuser and body are each replaceable on their own. Damage one element and you repair just that part, never the whole lamp.

MODULAR BY DESIGN

Change the body, keep the engine

The NEOZ light engine is independent of the body and lifts out to move between them, the heart of our modular design. Restyle to a new look, or replace a damaged body, while keeping the electronics you already own.

Service and repair

Looked after, wherever you are

Our service centre is in Sydney, and we accept lamps back from anywhere in the world for assessment and repair. More often we diagnose remotely and send the right parts with video instructions, backed by our online help centre, so your lamps keep working wherever they are.

Commercial grade

Made for the floor

Engineered for nightly use in five-star service, with all-day battery life, fast charging and charging solutions that scale from a single base to a 48-lamp station. Backed by an industry-leading 5-year warranty, and fully serviceable for the long term.

Contact us
What is the Medusa made from, and how is it made?

The Medusa's body is optically clear solid polyester resin, hand-cast by artist Brad Allen-Waters in his Blue Mountains studio. Each lamp is individually poured, set and hand-polished, with a reflector embedded inside the resin and a finely stippled inner core formed by a sand-coated mould. It is a demanding, patient process, and the reason every Medusa is a little different.

What kind of light does the Medusa give?

A reflector set within the resin gathers the light and casts it outward softly and evenly in every direction, without glare. Rather than a directed beam, the Medusa produces a warm, diffuse glow that seems to come from inside the form itself, which makes it a sculptural centrepiece as much as a light.

How long does the Medusa run, and how is it charged?

The Medusa uses NEOZ's long-running PRO Light Engine, which gives up to 66 hours of light on high and around 310 hours on low, from a charge of about 8.5 hours. It is available with a warm white LED at 2600K as standard or a warm candle LED at 1800K, and it charges on all NEOZ charging systems, shipping with an N1 Charging Base that includes AU, UK, EU and USA wall plugs.

Is every Medusa unique?

Yes. Because each one is hand-cast and hand-finished, there are small natural variations from piece to piece, and the stippled inner texture gives every lamp its own character. No two Medusas are exactly alike.

Can the Medusa be used outdoors?

The Medusa carries an IP52 rating, offering protection against dust and lightly dripping water. It suits indoor use and sheltered settings, but as a substantial, hand-cast resin centrepiece it is really intended for tabletops and bar tops rather than exposed outdoor positions.

Is the Medusa serviceable?

Yes. Every major part is user replaceable, including the battery, light source and reflector, and NEOZ offers repairs and servicing. Like all NEOZ lamps, the Medusa is made to endure and to be kept for years rather than replaced.
