First introduced in 2006, the NEOZ Owl cordless lamp marks 20 years of enduring design in hospitality lighting. Recognised for its glare-free downlight and modular V4 battery system, it offered a refined alternative to traditional candles, delivering consistency, safety, and control to table lighting. Over time, it has become one of the most recognisable cordless lamps in the NEOZ collection, valued for its balance of form and functional reliability.
A new standard in cordless hospitality lighting
Originally conceived as a compact, durable stainless steel cordless table lamp, Owl was designed for demanding hospitality environments. At the time, it was among the first to adopt lithium-ion battery technology, enabling reliable, untethered operation in service settings.
It was also one of the first designs to introduce NEOZ’s now ubiquitous interchangeable diffuser system, allowing light levels and ambience to be adapted across different settings. This system continues to underpin the entire NEOZ range today.
The Owl emerged alongside the NEOZ V4 system, a significant step forward in cordless hospitality lighting. Developed specifically for restaurants and hotels, the system introduced high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, extended runtimes, and a modular internal architecture designed for long-term use. Each component was designed to be user-replaceable, allowing venues to maintain performance over time rather than replace entire units.
This approach shifted the category. The lamp was no longer a disposable object, but a durable tool designed to meet the operational demands of professional hospitality environments.

A design that solved a long-standing problem
What defines the Owl is its sculptural humility. Compact and non-obtrusive, the form delivers a precisely controlled, softly diffused light. By reflecting the light source, the design produces a warm, ambient glow that enhances food presentation and skin tones, while remaining practical for reading menus.
This resolves a long-standing challenge in hospitality design. The Owl provides intimate table lighting without the instability, inconsistency, and glare associated with candles. It also reduces reflections on glassware and polished surfaces, ensuring visual comfort within the dining environment.
“NEOZ has always focused on innovation, but it is especially rewarding to see those innovations stand the test of time,” says Jon Hemming, CEO of NEOZ. “When a design created to solve a real problem becomes a lasting part of hospitality spaces around the world, you know you have created something meaningful.”

Consistency over reinvention
Over the past two decades, the Owl has appeared in a wide range of settings, from intimate dining rooms to large-scale hospitality venues. Its longevity is not defined by reinvention, but by consistency. The design continues to perform with minimal intervention, delivering reliable cordless lighting that enhances the atmosphere rather than competing with it.
While the internal components have evolved, the form of Owl has remained largely unchanged.
The original 5W halogen light source has been replaced with an advanced 1W LED with a high colour rendering index (CRI 93). This preserves the warmth of traditional light while significantly improving efficiency. The shift has also enabled a reduction in battery size, from six cells to a single cell.
While the form has remained unchanged, the technology within has continued to evolve. The internal system has been progressively refined and upgraded, ensuring the Owl remains aligned with the latest advancements across the NEOZ range. Today, the collection benefits from the N1 light engine, shared across the broader portfolio, delivering improved efficiency, light quality, and long-term performance.
Twenty years on, the Owl remains exactly what it was designed to be: a small, quietly confident table lamp that allows the room around it to shine.
